What is Pet Expert Chat and how can I use it?

Pet Expert Chat is a free video chat service that’s included as standard with all Petplan policies. Perhaps you have a question about your pet's health or need some advice on behaviour or nutrition. You can talk to a veterinary professional 24/7 or book an appointment at a time that suits you. Simply login to your My Petplan account and go to the ‘MySupport’ area.

Can I insure a pet of any age?

Whether your pet is a cat, dog or rabbit you can start your pet's insurance from 6 weeks of age. Once your pet is insured with Petplan, as long as you renew your cover each year without a break, we will continue to pay claims for ongoing conditions. For our Covered For Life® cat insurance policy you must start the insurance before your cat’s 10th birthday. On the Covered For Life® dog insurance policy, cover must start from 6 weeks of age and before their 8th birthday. For select dog breeds, cover must start before their 5th birthday. Please contact our friendly Customer Care team on 0345 077 1934 if you have further questions about insuring your dog. On our rabbit insurance policy, cover must begin before their 5th birthday. If you haven't had pet insurance previously and your pet has passed the upper age limit you'll be glad to hear that there is no upper age limit on our Petplan Essential policy for dogs and cats.

Question 3

How can I pay for my policy or change my payment method?

Accepted Answer

For a simple and stress free option, you can pay your premium monthly or annually by secure Direct Debit. There is no interest if you choose to pay by monthly instalments.

If you would like to setup a new direct debit please complete the Paying by direct debit form. If you have already paid for your annual premium by card, you will need to wait until your next renewal date to activate a direct debit.

If you currently pay by direct debit, you may change your payment method at any time. To update an existing direct debit or to pay by any other means please call us on 0330 102 6735 and we'll be happy to discuss payment options with you.

Question 4

Can Petplan pay my vet directly? How does this work?

Accepted Answer

Yes we can pay your vet directly if they are happy to receive payment in this way. In most cases, your vet can submit an eclaim which is the fastest way to get the information to us. This means you won't be out of pocket and they'll even submit the claim on your behalf.

If you check with your vet and they can’t submit an eclaim, please use our online form to submit your claim. You can still select whether we should pay your vet or reimburse the policyholder if you have already made payment.

Question 5

I have more than one pet to insure, can I get a discount?

Yes, if you have two or more pets regardless of species (i.e. dog, cat and rabbits) then you are entitled to a Multi-Pet discount. For each animal you are given £1 per pet per month discount off your premium. For example, if you have 1 dog insurance policy, 1 cat insurance policy and 1 rabbit insurance policy you will get a £36 discount in your policy year.

If my pet has been ill before, will this be covered by my insurance policy?

At Petplan, we don't believe in a "one-size-fits-all" approach to pre-existing conditions, and review every pet's needs individually. Before taking out your dog, cat or rabbit insurance you must tell us about your pet's conditions and any prior illnesses or injuries they've had. We will then decide whether we can provide cover for this condition or not. We like to be as clear as possible with our customers, therefore any exclusion from cover placed on your policy will be stated clearly on your Certificate of Insurance. Your pet's previous medical history will not affect your premium. When you take out a policy you should always check your terms and conditions in conjunction with your Certificate of Insurance to see what is and what is not covered.

Am I covered for the cost of telephone/video vet consulations?

Yes, we will cover these costs in the same way as we would cover a face to face vet consultation. Your Petplan policy also includes access to our free vet, behaviour and nutrition video chat service, Pet Expert Chat as standard.

How can I make changes to my policy?

It's important you review your Policy Documents to make sure your details are up to date and the policy still meets your needs. Please tell us as soon as possible if any of the information shown is incorrect or has changed.

What documents do I need for a death of a pet claim?

We understand losing a pet can be a very difficult time. In the sad event of your pet passing away we hope to make the claims process as straightforward as possible.

Along with the completed claim form, we will require the following documents:

Purchase receipt or rehoming document to confirm amount you paid for your pet
Confirmation from the vet that the pet passed away if we haven’t already received a vet fees claim form that confirms his/ her loss.

How can I update my contact details?

It's important we have your up to date contact details in case we need to get in touch.

If you have moved house, changed your email address or want to change your contact number simply log in to My Petplan and change your details in your account. Please note it will take a few days to process the update before the information is reflected in your My Petplan account.

If you need to change anything else or want to discuss something with us you can send us a message and will make those updates for you.
