Will Petplan still cover my pet for travel to the EU?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Petplan will still provide the same cover for trips to the EU with your pet. Any travel will need to be in line with the requirements of the UK government and the EU Pet Travel Scheme (PETS). It’s important that you check the UK government website www.gov.uk or contact your vet at least four months before travelling to get the latest advice. For full details of your pet’s cover, please check your Terms and Conditions.

What is the maximum time limit for me to submit a claim?

You have 12 months from the date your pet started treatment for an illness or injury in which to submit a claim. Make a claim here.

What do we mean by continuous cover and why is this important?

Accepted Answer

Continuous cover means ensuring there is no break in cover between your 4 weeks free cover and the annual policy you purchase to continue your pets protection. As long as you purchase the annual policy before your free cover expires then the cover is continuous.

If you allow the free cover to end before purchasing a policy it will be underwritten as a new policy. That means that any signs of illness or injury prior to you purchasing a policy will be considered as pre-existing and are unlikely to be covered on the policy. What’s more unless you have continuous cover you will have a 14 day deferment period on your new policy, which means any illness that shows clinical signs in the first 14 days will not be covered.

As long as you purchase a policy before your free cover ends you will have continuous cover, conditions which arise during the free cover period will not be considered as pre-existing and you will have no deferment period for illness on the policy you purchase.

Question 7

On your Essential cover, when does the 12 month claiming period start?

Our Essential policy covers each illness or injury for up to 12 months from when your pet starts treatment.

For example, if you had 12 month cover for your pet starting in August, and he/ she then developed diabetes, starting treatment in February, you can claim for their treatment for this condition until February of the following year (12 months) providing you renew your policy and continue paying your premiums. After this time, all cover for diabetes will stop and this condition will be excluded from your policy.

I have more than one pet to insure, can I get a discount?

Yes, if you have two or more pets regardless of species (i.e. dog, cat and rabbits) then you are entitled to a Multi-Pet discount. For each animal you are given £1 per pet per month discount off your premium. For example, if you have 1 dog insurance policy, 1 cat insurance policy and 1 rabbit insurance policy you will get a £36 discount in your policy year.

Why does my pet have to have an annual dental check?

Whether you have a cat, dog or rabbit insurance policy, you must take reasonable steps to maintain your pet's health throughout the policy year and to prevent injury and illness. Therefore you must arrange and pay for your pet to have an annual dental examination by a vet in order to prevent illness or injury and get any treatment they recommend to be carried out within 6 months. By continuing with these check-ups this shows us that you have played your part in caring for your dog, cat or rabbit, so we can play ours.

Where did the concept of pet insurance originate?

Pet insurance started in the 1970s when just a small handful of providers existed. Then pet insurance became recognised and sought after which resulted in an increase in the number of players within the pet insurance market. Petplan, the market leader, was founded by Patsy Bloom who saw an opportunity in the market after facing mounting vet bills for her own dog´s illness. It wasn't long before pet insurance became recognised and sought after which resulted in an increase in the number of players within the pet insurance market.
